The HK417, the larger framed .308 (7.62 NATO) caliber version of the HK416 was purchased and used by NSWDG during early GWOT before the availability of 300 Blackout and subsequent platforms became commonplace.
The HK417 "Sniper" is a custom variant of the HK417 that was modified by NSWDG to fit their needs of a "DMR" style .308. This includes chopping the barrel down (approximately 14.1") to be flush with the handguard. In addition, the AAC Mk13-SD suppressor was used, an extremely lightweight can from AAC that was also used on the Remington Defense .300 WIN MAG bolt action. This version includes a Leupold Mk 6 3-18, the most commonly seen optic with this configuration. The sniper variant is also unique in that it typically uses HK's DMR stock, but oddly not the DMR receiver extension, which means the small aluminum tab on the stock has to be milled off in order for the stock to fit on the standard buffer tube.
The "Assaulter" variant is a standard 12" barrel configuration that is often seen outfitted with either an AAC SDN-6 or B&T Rotex III suppressor. Both the EOTech 551 and the Nightforce 2.5-10x24 RECON are commonly seen, the latter typically outfitted with a backup RDS (JPoint, MRDS, Aimpoint T1, etc…).
